By the second service on a Sunday morning, more than one facilities volunteer has heard some version of the same complaint: “It just feels stuffy in here.” The thermostat says the temperature is fine. Nobody can point to what’s actually wrong. But something isn’t right.
Usually, it’s the air, not the temperature.
Why “stuffy” usually isn’t about temperature at all
A room full of people breathing steadily for an hour builds up carbon dioxide faster than most facilities teams expect — especially in a sanctuary designed decades ago, before anyone was thinking about ASHRAE Standard 62.1, the industry benchmark for ventilation rates in spaces like this. Rising CO2 doesn’t show up on a thermostat. It shows up as drowsiness, restlessness, and a vague sense that the room needs “more air,” even when the temperature reading looks perfectly normal. Comfort and air quality are two different problems, and a system tuned only for temperature can miss the second one entirely.
The sanctuary problem: empty most of the week, full for two hours
Sanctuaries present a genuinely tricky ventilation challenge, for the same reason they’re a tricky heating and cooling challenge: they sit nearly empty most of the week, then fill to capacity for a service or two. A ventilation system that runs at full capacity around the clock wastes energy conditioning an empty room. One that only ramps up after people notice the air feels stale is already behind. The right approach is a system that can bring in outdoor air and ramp ventilation up ahead of a service, then step back down once the room empties.
The most reliable way to make that automatic is a CO2 sensor tied to the fresh air damper. Instead of a fixed ventilation schedule, or a damper that’s stuck wherever it happened to land, the system reads actual CO2 levels in the room and opens the damper only as far as occupancy calls for. That keeps you within the ventilation rate your local code requires during a service, without pulling in more outdoor air, and the humidity or cold that comes with it, than the room actually needs the rest of the week.
There’s a second layer to this in older sanctuaries: humidity control. Pipe organs and wood structures (pews, flooring, chancel woodwork) are sensitive to humidity swings in both directions. Too dry, and wood and organ components can crack or loosen. Too humid, and you’re looking at warping, or worse, mold. Stable humidity control matters more in a sanctuary with a pipe organ or original woodwork than it does almost anywhere else on a church campus.
Choir rooms have their own problem
Choir and rehearsal rooms tend to be smaller, more enclosed, and, historically, an afterthought in ventilation planning compared to the sanctuary. That’s a problem, because a room full of people breathing and singing for an extended rehearsal generates more air exchange demand per square foot than almost any other space on campus. Good air changes and humidity control matter here both for comfort and, in rooms that store sheet music or instruments, for protecting what’s inside the room, not just the people in it.
Classrooms and offices: a different kind of steady
If your church runs a school or regular weekday programming, the classroom wing needs a completely different approach than the sanctuary. Instead of short, intense bursts of occupancy, you’re dealing with steady, daily use for most of the year, which calls for continuous, consistent ventilation and filtration rather than a ramp-up-and-down strategy. Filtration in particular deserves extra attention in classrooms, since it’s where children spend the most consecutive hours of anywhere on a church campus. Offices land somewhere similar, though with a lighter, steadier load overall.
Why one plan doesn’t cover the whole building
This is really the same conversation as choosing the right HVAC system in the first place. A sanctuary, a fellowship hall, a classroom wing, and an office suite don’t just need different equipment; they need different ventilation strategies entirely, for the same underlying reason: they’re occupied completely differently. A few common questions
Does a bigger HVAC system automatically mean better air quality?
No. Capacity and air quality aren’t the same thing. A large system that isn’t bringing in and exchanging enough outdoor air can still leave a room feeling stuffy, regardless of how much it can heat or cool.
How do we know if our sanctuary has an air quality problem and not just a temperature problem?
If the complaints show up partway through a service rather than at the start, and the thermostat reading looks normal when people mention it, that’s a strong sign the issue is ventilation and CO2 buildup, not the temperature setpoint.
Can we automate ventilation instead of relying on a fixed schedule?
Yes. A CO2 sensor on the fresh air damper is the most common way to do this. It adjusts ventilation to actual occupancy instead of a timer, which handles a sanctuary’s empty-then-full pattern automatically and keeps energy use in check.
